FOR soil binding: Horticulture workers planting grass at the Japanese section of the Government Botanical Garden in Udhagamandalm on Friday.
Udhagamandalam: The Japanese section of Government Botanical Garden here, which had been a source of concern during heavy rain, is likely to be one of the most attractive features this summer. Located near the threshold of the garden, the section had over the years become flood-prone.
Consequently, during wet seasons it had become a liability to the management as overflowing storm water from the section flooded not only the adjoining sections but also the entrance.
With the management initiating work on realigning and raising the section a few months ago, it is now in the process of strengthening its banks and slopes with a special variety of grass called Eragrassis Curvula, commonly known as Weeping Love Grass.
Stating that 50,000 slips had been obtained from the Central Soil and Water Conservation Research and Training Centre at Rees Corner near here, the Assistant Director of Horticulture in-charge of the garden M. Pragasam told The Hindu here on Friday that the grass cover would be more effective than concrete retaining walls.
Apart from enhancing the beauty of the area, the grass would help prevent silting of the ponds as it was an effective soil binder. The expenses incurred on providing such a multi-purpose green cover was not much. The manager of the garden, G. Uma Rani, said that the grass had been planted in a part of the top garden to prevent soil erosion.
To a question, she said that it will take about 10 to 15 days for the grass to establish.
