This Day That Age
“We have hardly any facility for undertaking big irrigation schemes in our State and, therefore, we have to take up small schemes and make steady progress in food production,” declared Mr. K. Kamaraj, while declaring open on January 3 the Manimuthar Reservoir near Kallidaikurichi. Mr. M. Bakthavatsalam, Home Minister, presided over the function which was held in a big illuminated pandal at the dam site. The reservoir is expected to stabilise supplies to the existing ayacut of the Tambaraparni system and also to supplement supplies to about 320 precariously rainfed tanks in Ambasamudram, Nanguneri, Tirunelveli, Srivaikuntam and Tiruchendur taluks, having an aggregate ayacut of about 20,000 acres. The dam is located at bout five miles from Kallidaikurichi railway station. At this place the river drains into an area of 62 sq. miles.
