dated January 5, 1958: Trek to South Pole

Sir Edmund Hillary, joint conqueror of Mount Everest, with Tenzing Norgay, on January 3 reached the South Pole. He is the first man to get there by the overland route since Captain Robert Scott’s ill-fated expedition in 1912. Sir Edmund, who is leading the New Zealand trans-Antarctic expedition, radioed the news of his success to the Ross Sea Committee, organisers of the expedition.
