Work on road improvement project to resume

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The second phase of the City Roads Improvement Project will take off in two months, Minister for Public Works Mons Joseph has said.

He was presiding over a function organised at the Secretariat for the signing of a renewed agreement between the government and Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Ltd. (TRDCL) here on Friday.

Mr. Joseph said the project was expected to be completed within 18 months of the date of commencement.

He the project had been bogged down since November 2006 owing to the failure to hand over the land required for road development.

“The government has since sorted out the problems and more than 85 per cent of the land is ready to be handed over to the company. Most of the remaining land is in possession of government departments. Efforts are on to complete the process within 90 days of the commencement of the project.”

Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary Tom Jose and TRDCL chairman K. Ramchand exchanged signed documents to formalise the agreement. Senior PWD officials and representatives of the company were present on the occasion.

Arbitration

Mr. Joseph said the government and the TRDCL had agreed to arbitration to settle the compensation claimed by the company for the loss caused by the delay. “The additional financial commitment will be adjusted in the annuity payment,” he said.
