CBI completes probe into Rizwanur death

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has completed the probe into the case of Rizwanur Rehman, the 30-year-old graphic designer who was found dead on the railway tracks on September 21 last in Kolkata.

Rizwanur Rehman had married Priyanka Todi, daughter of industrialist Ashok Todi. Rizwanur’s death had sparked angry protests in the city as it was alleged that he was murdered after his in-laws brought police pressure on him to separate from his wife.

As public outcry spilled onto the streets of Kolkata, the State Government ordered a probe by the CID of police. The CBI took up the probe on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.

Well-placed sources told The Hindu on Friday that all indications and scientific evidence pointed to the fact that Rizwanur Rehman was not murdered. It appeared to be a case of driving him to suicide. “Abetment to suicide is definitely made out and the agency is also looking at the role of police officers who were reportedly used by the Todi family to bring about pressure on him to separate from his wife,” sources said.

However, a final decision on the CBI report is yet to be taken by its Director Vijay Shanker, who has to point out the criminality made out against the suspects. The report, along with the CBI chief’s recommendation, would be submitted to the High Court on January 8 in a sealed cover.
