BANGALORE: In India one man towers above all others in horse racing — Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy, who recently achieved the singular distinction of leading in 500 Classic winners. Dr Ramaswamy had his first classic winner on July 5, 1965. Silver Jet, owned in partnership with his brother, romped home to win the Colts Trial Stakes. The horse was trained by N.E. Raymond and ridden by Pandu Khade. From Silver Jet to Classic Sky, his 500th Classic winner, Dr Ramaswamy has dominated horse racing in India. The Karnataka Race Horse Owners’ Association was among the first to felicitate Dr. Ramaswamy for his distinction. At the races in Bangalore on Friday, after the New Year Trophy, Dr. Ramswamy was presented with mementoes first by Ashok Raghavan, treasurer of the KROA, followed by Mr. M.B. Mangalorkar, a senior trainer. Mr. B. Puttana, president of the Trainers’ Association, also gave away a salver to Dr. Ramaswamy and Mr. Kashi Vishwanath of the KROA presented a bouquet. Dr. Ramaswamy thanked everyone for their gesture, and paid tribute to his entire team of trainers, jockeys and stable lads all of who according to him played a role in the achievement.
