Anuja Jung clinches gold

Kirti Patil

AHMEDABAD: Anuja Jung kept her focus intact to beat a wavering Anjali Bhagwat to win the gold medal in the women’s 50m Sports rifle 3-position event in the 51st National shooting championship at the Rifle Club here on Friday.

Having missed most of the international season in 2007 due to poor scores, Anuja came here with just one goal.

“I wanted to beat myself and I am happy to have done that,” said Anuja after winning the rifle 3-position event.

Anuja (575) qualified for the final in the second place, one point behind Anjali, the Olympic quota holder in the event. Anjali, who finished seventh in the Asian championship in Kuwait last month, seemed to have trouble with the movement behind the targets at the semi-indoor ranges here. A dog kept moving around her target, but since the final had started no effort was done to get the animal out of the range.

Anjali’s one-point lead soon diminished when she lost focus and shot a poor 6.8 on her second shot.

Immediately Anuja took the lead and kept up her shots within Anjali’s scores and went on to win the National title. Anuja had a steady final round of 9.7, 8.9, 9.8, 10.8, 9.4, 9.8, 9.7, 10.2, 10.0, 9.3 for a total of 97.6. Although Anjali had three 10s, her second shot cost her the title.
