Bangalore: It was a regular day at the office for Dav Whatmore, as the National Cricket Academy’s Director of Operations got back to the city after spending his Christmas break back home in Australia. Besides fine-tuning plans for the NCA, Whatmore also inducted two key members of his support staff — Paul Chapman, strengthening and conditioning coach, and Paul Close, physiotherapist. However, the injured seamers S. Sreesanth and Munaf Patel failed to turn up at the NCA. The duo was expected to report to Whatmore on Friday but is yet to arrive. Late in the evening, Sreesanth confirmed that he will be at the academy on Saturday morning while there is no news yet of Munaf. Meanwhile, along with the injured duo, Robin Uthappa and S. Badrinath will also train under Whatmore in the coming days. Gautam Gambhir, who is recovering from a sore shoulder, is expected here next week. According to official sources, the NCA will henceforth be the nodal agency to certify a player’s fitness while coming back from injury. Chapman and Close will assist Whatmore in scrutinising a player’s fitness before informing the selection committee and the BCCI about his availability for selection. — Principal Correspondent
