Sydney: Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has been summoned by match referee Mike Procter for a hearing after an on-field incident with Australian Andrew Symonds during the third day of the second Test. Harbhajan, it is learnt, could face a charge of racial abuse in the hearing scheduled for Saturday. Under the ICC’s Code of Conduct, racial abuse is a Level 3 offence. Clause 3.3 says “using language or gestures that offends, insults, humiliates, intimidates, threatens, disparages or vilifies another person on the basis of that person’s race, religion, gender, colour, descent or national or ethnic origin” could attract a ban of between two and four Tests or four and eight ODIs. Harbhajan and Symonds exchanged words on Friday during the off-spinner’s innings of 63. Matthew Hayden, Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar appeared involved in diffusing the situation. Umpire Mark Benson then spoke at length to Harbhajan, obscuring his lips with his hand. — Special Correspondent
