VISAKHAPATNAM: The joy of the Indian Blues team, which held India Reds in the first round on Thursday, was short-lived as fifth seed Iran recorded a 3-1 win over them in the men’s second round of the Vizag Steel-Asian team chess championship here on Friday. The first result on the fourth board was a drawn encounter between IM Morteza Darban and IM Gogineni Rohit in Sicilian Opening. Then Morteza Mahjoob outwitted former Asian junior champion and India Blues captain J. Deepan Chakravarthy in a Catalan Advanced Variation. Once he played a dubious e4 on the 10th move, Deepan was under pressure and after missing some moves immediately after the opening, he never really recovered. Then S. Arun Prasad was a disappointing loser against Shojaat Ghane in the Catalan Opening. The results: Round-robin league: Men: Afghanistan lost to China 0-4; India Reds bt Sri Lanka 4-0 (S.S. Ganguly bt G.M.C.M. Rajapakshe; Abhijit Kunte bt M.K.A. Russell; G.N. Gopal bt G.C. Anuruddha; Abjhijeet Gupta bt Nishendra Herath). Iran bt India Blues 3-1 (Ehsan Ghaem Maghami drew with Neelotpal Das; Morteza Mahjoob bt J. Deepan Chakravarthy; Morteza Darban drew with Gogineni Rohit; Shojaat Ghane bt S. Arun Prasad). Uzbekistan lost to Vietnam 1-3; Women: Sri Lanka lost to Vietnam 0-3; Indian Greens lost to India Blues 1-2 (Ch. Sahajasri lost to Swathi Ghate; N.L.V. Anusha lost to Baisakhi Das; Kanuri Tejaswi bt Amrutha Mokal). China bt Iran 2.5-0.5; India Reds bt Uzbekistan 3-0 (Dronavalli Harika bt O. Sabirova; Tania Sachdev bt Nafisa Muminova; Aarthie Ramaswamy bt Iroda Khamrakulova).
