BERHAMPUR: South Orissa drama festival was inaugurated at the Kavisurya Rangamanch auditorium of the city on Thursday evening. This six-day drama festival is being organised by the Ganjam Zilla Mancha Kalakar Sammilani to promote theatre and acting in South Orissa. Vice-Chancellor of the Berhampur University Bijay Kumar Sahu inaugurated the drama festival. ‘Shakti Rupena Sansthita’, a Hindi play, was enacted on the inaugural night of the festival by Nimakhandi Yuvak Sangha. It was a modern form of experimental theatre written by Balgopal Satpathy, who was also the choreographer of the play. The play was directed by Kamakshi Patro. This play used no props on the stage during the performance. Lighting managed by veteran stage artiste, Raju Padhi provided metaphoric environments to different moods of the play. The play tried to depict continuing exploitation of women through ages. Music, dance and human formations were used to depict different scenes. Recent case of gang rape of a woman near Konark and increasing trend of female foeticide found place in the play. Hidamba, a play by Nirjharini drama group of Jeypore, was staged on Friday evening .
