Water released from Palar dam
Staff Reporter
PALANI: Water has been released from Palar Porundhalar Dam for irrigation here.
On Friday, 75 cusecs of water was initially released through the 42-km-long left bank canal to irrigate over 10,000 acres. Farmers would get water for the next 120 days, said an engineer in the Public Works Department.
Several villages, including Naikarapatti, Maanur, Gorikadavu, P. Ammapatti, Ravimangalam, Kavalipatti, C. Kalayamputhur, Palayam, Kozhumamkondan and Sukkumanaickenpatti, would benefit. Maize, groundnut and paddy were cultivated on a large-scale in the areas.
The water level in Palar dam stood at 65 feet. The inflow was 125 cusecs, thanks to heavy flow in all streams on Kodaikanal hill, the main water source to all dams in Palani taluk.
Judicious use
Already, PWD officials had released water through Zameen Raja canal and Thadakulam canals to irrigate crops under direct ayacut. Farmers were asked to use water judiciously to get better yield.
