Theni sports stadium to get more facilities

A swimming pool and gymnasium are among them

Rs.1 crore sanctioned for the projects: Collector Top priority for total sanitation programme
THENI: The district sports stadium will get an ultra modern swimming pool and a multipurpose gymnasium by April. A compound wall will also be constructed around the stadium. A sum of Rs.1 crore has been sanctioned for the projects, Collector Har Sahay Meena has said.
Talking to media persons, he said all efforts had been taken to create more facilities at the district stadium. Work order had been issued and boomi pooja was performed for the works, which would be completed by April.
Detailing the development activities in the district, Mr. Meena said top priority had been given for a total sanitation programme particularly the individual toilet scheme. Village panchayat presidents were encouraged to concentrate in the scheme in order to win the Nirmal Puraskar award. A total of 32,895 toilets against the target of 73,360 had been constructed so far. Officials were directed to achieve the target on construction of toilets at Anganwadi centres and in schools by March end. The target under the scheme would be achieved by 2009.
To boost employment activities, 200 men self help groups had been formed in villages and towns and micro credit facility extended. Already, 687 women self help groups were functioning in the district. Special entrepreneurial training was imparted to a majority of self-help groups and a revolving fund of Rs.5.40 lakh disbursed to them.
National identity cards had been given to 8,804 out of a total of 15,606 disabled persons. Rest of the beneficiaries would be covered in the next phase, said the Collector.
Poverty eradication
Poverty eradication committees had been formed in 35 villages this year as part of the poverty eradication programme.
Similarly, identity cards were issued to 2.53 lakh poor farmers under the farmers’ social security scheme and assistance to the tune of Rs.1.20 crore disbursed to 2,227 beneficiaries so far. Orders had been issued to 589 poor farmers to enable them to get a monthly financial assistance.
