Special cover on Thanjavur painting released

Artistic Expressions: Children taking part in a painting competition, organised as part of the India National Philatelic Exhibition, in Chennai on Friday.

CHENNAI: A special cover ‘Thanjavur painting’ was released on Friday as part of the India National Philatelic Exhibition organised by the Tamil Nadu Postal Circle.

The third day of the exhibition, being held at Rajah Muthiah and Rani Meyammai Halls, Egmore, was dedicated to arts. The cover featuring an image of a woman and a swan was released by A. Annamalai, Postmaster General of the southern region, Madurai. He spoke about the specialities of Thanjavur paintings, known for their vivid colours and rich composition. Such art is also called as panel painting as it is painted on wood planks.

Film actor R. Sivakumar who received the special cover commended the Department of Posts’ initiative to celebrate arts. He said that such exhibitions would pave the way for students to learn about eminent leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi, who insisted on eradication of untouchability and progress of the downtrodden, and the history of several countries.

He also recalled that several stamps had been released on renowned film personalities such as Sivaji Ganesan and A.V. Meyyappa Chettiar.

Senior philatelist Sita Batheja and Sushil Kumar, director of postal services of southern region, Madurai, participated in the function.

On the same day, 140 students from various city schools got an opportunity to showcase their creative skills at a competition held on various themes. The competition, which was open for students from Standards I to X, had participants sketching their imagination on canvas on themes such as rainwater harvesting and environment pollution.

A postal department official said that winners of the competition would be announced on Sunday. A quiz and cultural programme were also held.
