Now, focus on road safety reinforced Law & order

The police are educating motorists, says

R. Rajaram

The city police have reinforced their focus on road safety at the start of 2008 by educating different categories of motorists.

Interactive sessions with various categories of vehicle-users, being held as part of the Road Safety Week celebrations, drive home the message of traffic rules and safe driving in order to reduce accidents.

An area of concern for the authorities, road accidents in the city limit had risen in 2007 by over 25 per cent.

Of the total 748 road accidents reported within the city limit in 2007, a total of 127 were fatal cases claimed 130 lives.

In 2006, 97 fatal accident cases were reported claiming the lives of 100 persons.

Police sources say fatal accidents occur mostly owing to error in judgment and negligence on the part of the vehicle-users. While the number of vehicles has increased, the road width remains the same, say the police.

Though the police have been booking cases for over-speeding, rash driving and drunken driving in a bid to discipline motorists and check accidents, violations are still noticeable, more during night hours in the absence of traffic beat constables.

Motorists tend to overtake from the left and this risky trend could be witnessed at signal points and busy thoroughfares.

There are increasing instances of town buses using jarring horns and indulging in over-speeding to the chagrin of other road-users. Violations by autorickshaws that carry more number of school students beyond the permitted level also warrant attention. While stating that the onus was also on the vehicle-users on safe driving, a senior police official here said fatal accidents were being viewed seriously now.

The Assistant Commissioners of Police attached to the Traffic Wing have been instructed to inspect the fatal accident spot, ascertain the reason for the accident and suggest prevention methods.

Similarly, a team of officials from police, transport and highways departments is required to visit the accident spot and submit a detailed report along with the recommendations to the government through the Collector.

The police say they have plans to hold road safety awareness programmes once in two months. Simultaneously, feedback from the public would also be sought for improving upon traffic management and accident prevention.
