Udupi: The Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members staged a walk out at the general body meeting of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat here on Friday over the improper distribution of ration cards. Raising the issue, BJP member Kota Srinivas Poojary said that many poor families which did not have Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections were shown as having LPG connection in the ration cards. Consequently, they were not being given kerosene which they were entitled for. This had hit them hard. But on the other hand, those who had LPG connections were shown as not having LPG connection, he said. He had raised the issue in the last three general body meetings of the panchayat, but no action had been initiated. In the immediate last meeting, it had been decided that the matter would be taken up with Deputy Commissioner. The written reply given in the implementation report of Friday was misleading as it had not touched upon the main issue, Mr. Srinivas Poojary said. Raju Poojary, president of zilla panchayat, said that the written reply of the officials proved their inefficiency. Action could be initiated against them for their lax attitude. The issue would be taken with Deputy Commissioner, he said. However, Mr. Srinivas Poojary said that many aggrieved people were blaming the ZP members for the anomalies in the distribution of ration cards. Gerald Fernandes, Leader of the Opposition, supported Mr. Srinivas Poojary.
