HYDERABAD: Elected representatives have opposed the government’s proposal to set up a society to oversee the daily functioning of integrated residential school complexes which are planned by merging all SC,ST, BC and Minority Welfare hostels in the State. At a meeting convened by the government with the floor leaders of political parties and MLCs representing the Teacher constituencies here on Friday, the MLAs asserted that the schools should function under a directorate and not a society. They suggested retention of Telugu medium while introducing English as a medium of instruction. They said they were not opposed to introduction of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) syllabus per se. School Education Minister C. Damodar Rajanarasimha said 650 complexes would be established at a cost of Rs.5,000 crore. The government was seeking feedback from the parties on the proposal. Chukka Ramaiah, MLC, said while introduction of English was welcome, students should be provided the option to study in Telugu medium too. P. Subba Reddy, also an MLC, said the complexes should maintain 1:25 student teacher ratio. Nomula Narasimhaiah (CPI-M) said it was strange that the government was mooting the idea of merging welfare hostels and converting them into complexes. K. Sudhakar Reddy, MLC, said the government should ensure that the service conditions of teachers were protected if a directorate was created for the proposed schools.
