Bus burning case: execution of convicts postponed

CHENNAI: The execution of three persons convicted and sentenced to death in the Dharmapuri bus burning case has been postponed till the disposal of the Special Leave Petition before the Supreme Court.

A submission to this effect was made by State Public Prosecutor Raja Elango before a Division Bench, comprising Justices D. Murugesan and V. Periya Karuppiah, on Friday, when petitions filed by the convicts seeking postponement of the execution came up for hearing.

A communication from the Superintendent of Coimbatore Central Prison was also furnished It said: “As per the provisions stipulated in Explanation No.1 under Rule 912 of the Tamilnadu Prison Manual, Volume 2, it is informed that the date of execution of sentence of death awarded by the I Additional Sessions Judge in Salem dated February 16, 2007 and confirmed by the Madras High Court is postponed till the disposal of the Special Leave Petition filed before the Supreme Court of India, consequent to the intimation received from the Deputy Registrar, Supreme Court.”
