Karnataka HC grants bail to accused in bus burning case

BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Friday granted a petition for bail by Srinivasa alias Seena who is one of the accused in the burning of a Tamil Nadu bus in Bangalore on September 18 in which two passengers died.

Srinivasa, B. Manjunath, B.N. Manjunatha alias Beli and S. Sagay Raja, all of N.G. Road, Bangalore, had moved the High Court after the Fast Track Court 4, Bangalore, had on October 18 rejected their plea for bail. All the four accused and several others had been charge sheeted for allegedly being involved in the burning of a Tamil Nadu State Road Transport Corporation bus on Hosur Road at Bommanahalli.

The bus was bound for Chennai from Bangalore and it was being driven by Abdul Khurshid. When the bus reached Bommanahalli, a mob of 60 to 70 persons surrounded the vehicle and asked Khurshid, conductor, Devadass, and passengers to alight. The mob then poured petrol on the vehicle and torched it. Two passengers, who could not alight, were burnt alive.

The mob was protesting against the remark of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi against Lord Rama. The mob had earlier in the day stoned the house of Mr. Karunanidhi’s daughter in J.P. Nagar, Bangalore. The State said the Madivala police had registered a case against several accused under Sections 143, 144, 145, 147, 148, 341, 435, 304 read with Section 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984. Justice Anand disposed of the bail plea and allowed the petition.
