Iran defeats India Blues

V.V. Subrahmanyam

Morteza Mahjoob outwitted Deepan Chakravarthy

India Blues’s Neelotpal Das drew his game

VISAKHAPATNAM: The joy of the Indian Blues team, which held India Reds in the first round on Thursday, was short-lived as fifth seed Iran recorded a 3-1 win over them in the men’s second round of the Vizag Steel-Asian team chess championship here on Friday.

The first result on the fourth board was a drawn encounter between IM Morteza Darban and IM Gogineni Rohit in Sicilian Opening.

Then Morteza Mahjoob outwitted former Asian junior champion and India Blues captain J. Deepan Chakravarthy in a Catalan Advanced Variation.

Once he played a dubious e4 on the 10th move, Deepan was under pressure and after missing some moves immediately after the opening, he never really recovered.

Then S. Arun Prasadwas a disappointing loser against Shojaat Ghane in the Catalan Opening.

The only consolation for India Blues was Neelotpal Das’s draw with Ehsan Ghaem Maghami in the last result on this table.
