Capital caught in a jam

NEW DELHI: A huge religious procession taken out by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee on Guru Gobind Singh’s birth anniversary here on Friday clogged roads in and around Central Delhi, throwing traffic out of gear and reducing commuting to a snail’s pace.

The procession started from Gurdwara Rakab Ganj in the morning and terminated at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib in the evening. It passed through Pandit Pant Marg, Ashoka Road, Patel Chowk, Parliament Street, Regal Cinema, Connaught Circus, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Gole Market and Bhai Veer Singh Marg.

“I did not know about the procession and took an auto for Windsor Place roundabout from Rajendra Nagar at 12 noon. Since Ashoka Road had been cordoned off, I had to take a U-turn and go towards Kendriya Terminal, but that too was blocked by the traffic police. Left with no choice, I had to disembark and walk to my destination,” rued Devendra Pathak, employee of a multi-national company.

“I started an hour early for office as I had read in the newspapers about the traffic restrictions due to the procession. This saved me from getting stuck in the traffic snarl but some of my colleagues were not as lucky. Many of them were stuck around Connaught Place with the traffic barely inching forward,” said Chitrangda Sen, an employee with a non-government organisation in East Delhi.

The roundabouts at Mandi House and Windsor Place were the worst hit because of the various diversions effected by the traffic police in view of the procession.
