Sivankutty, MLA, are seen. — THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram south and Nedumangad educational sub-districts emerged overall champions in the high school and the upper primary school categories, respectively, at the Thiruvananthapuram revenue district schools youth festival that concluded here on Friday. The south sub-district secured 498 points in the high school category, followed by Kaniyapuram sub-district that scored 475 points. Attingal sub-district was third with 444 points. Nedumangad sub-district finished with 192 points in the upper primary school category. The second place went to Kaniyapuram sub-district with 185 points. In the high school category, Holy Angel’s Convent High School, Thiruvananthapuram, scored the maximum points (school-wise) – 142. Jyothi Nilayam Higher Secondary School St. Andrews came second with 136 points and Carmel EM Girls Higher Secondary School, Vazhuthacaud, came third with 122 points. In the upper primary school category, Carmel High School came first with 70 points. Holy Angel’s Convent emerged the school where girl students secured the maximum points in the youth festival. In the Sanskrit youth fete, Palode sub-district emerged on top with 198 points and in the Arabic youth festival, the Nedumangad and the Kaniyapuram sub-districts shared the top slot. In his inaugural address at the festival’s valedictory function, Minister for Sports M. Vijayakumar said students should be left to themselves to compete in youth festivals without parents taking an unhealthy interest in the events. The competition these days seemed to be more among parents than among children. This should change, he said. Next year onwards, there would be sports festivals in addition to youth festivals. Children would be classified into A, B, C and D categories according to their sporting abilities. Those with minimal sporting abilities would be placed in the D category. “Nowadays, parents are working hard to ensure that their children come in the D category. I often call such children ‘broiler children’; those who are placed in the fridge, taken out and then placed back. Such children get up in the morning, go to the tuition centre and then to school before heading back to the tuition centre on the way home. The children who have come here for the youth festival are obvious exceptions to the rule,” Mr. Vijayakumar said. Mayor C. Jayan Babu also spoke.
