TIRUCHI: The State Government has sanctioned three road over-bridges for Tiruchi district, including one across the railway level crossing on Oyamari Road in the city.

The three bridges will come up across railway level crossings between Srirangam and Fort stations; between Manapparai and Samudram; and between Lalgudi and Sirudhaiyur. The State will contribute about Rs.74 crore for the projects to be taken up jointly with the Railways, according to Highways Minister M.P. Saminathan.

After inspecting rain-ravaged roads here on Saturday, he said that the Oyamari Road bridge will fulfil a long-felt need of residents. The road that runs along the southern bank of the Cauvery river connects Chinthamani with Chennai Bypass Road. Frequent closure of the railway gate is a major reason for the under-utilisation of the road. The State Government has sanctioned Rs.26 crore for the bridge and the Railways is expected to contribute Rs.10 crore. Mr. Saminathan said that the design for the bridge was being worked out by the Highways Department and tenders were likely to be floated within the next six to seven months. Construction of the road over-bridge across the level crossing at the entrance of Manapparai would also ease traffic congestion. The Highways Department has sanctioned Rs.28 crore for the bridge and Rs.20.50 crore for the one between Lalgudi and Sirudhaiyur.

Work on construction of a new bridge across the Coleroon river, connecting Poondi with Sengaraiyur, would be completed by 2009.
