Staff Reporter

ALAPPUZHA: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will launch the State-level Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP) sponsored by the Union government at the Aishwariya Auditorium here at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Saturday, Alappuzha municipal chairman P.P. Chittaranjan said projects worth Rs.103.21 crore had been approved by the Union government for 22 municipalities in the State. Of this, 80 per cent, which worked out to Rs.81.17 crore, would be provided by the Union government while the State government and respective municipalities would chip in with 10 per cent each.

The programme, which would have the State’s Kudumbasree unit as the nodal agency, envisaged housing, house maintenance and basic infrastructure development in slums, including roads, drainage, drinking water and sanitation.

The maximum allocation was to the Alappuzha municipality, which would receive Rs.10.385 crore for development of 16 slum areas in the municipality. The municipality had got a major share because it had submitted the required projects within the stipulated timeframe, Mr. Chittaranjan said.

Alappuzha municipality was the only one in the district to be included in the programme. While 334 families from areas, including Vadackal Colony, Kuthirapanthi slum, Ayyamparambu, Illickal, Mullathuvalappu, Pallathuruthy, H.B. Padam and Chunkam Palace among others, would receive Rs.80,000 each for construction of houses, another 323 families would receive financial assistance to purchase land for housing purposes. These families would be those living on the shores of the A.S. Canal and the Vadai Canal.
