Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has constituted a committee to identify the constraints faced by the commercial sector and to come up with recommendations to facilitate the rapid growth of this sector which accounts for a substantial portion of the Gross Domestic Product of the State.

The committee will be headed by former Government Secretary Lida Jacob and the other members will be Jose Sebastian of the Institute of Entrepreneur Development; V.K.C. Mohammed Koya, leading industrialist and former MLA; M.S. Salim, management expert from TKM Institute of Management, Kollam; and M.R. Karmachandran, deputy general manager of the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC).

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Industries Minister Elamaram Karim said the committee had been asked to submit its report within three months and its recommendations were expected to form the basis of the government’s action plan to convert the State into a ‘world-class commercial hub.’

The committee will look into the incentives and assistances being enjoyed by the commercial sector in other States and countries. The chairperson, who was present at the press conference, said the committee proposed to hold sittings in different areas of the State to interact with different sections.
