Staff Reporter

KAKINADA: The State government has decided to trifurcate Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) into JNTU West, South and East branches for the sake of administrative convenience further improvement in the functioning of the university.

The JNTU West will be located in Hyderabad while the South and East branches will be set up in Anantapur and Kakinada respectively. JNTU East would come up near the existing College of Engineering on Pithapuram road in Kakinada.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy made this announcement in response to Kakinada MLA Mutha Gopalakrishna’s plea to sanction an IIT or IIM for the port town during the golden jubilee celebrations of Rangaraya Medical College (RMC) here on Saturday.

The Chief Minister said setting up an IIT or IIM in Kakinada was not in his hands though he appreciated the idea.

The MLA also sought a dental college for Kakinada to which the Chief Minister replied that he had no objection to the proposal though there were constraints. “Kakinada will assume greater importance than Rajahmundry in future and the government is aware of people’s aspirations,” the Chief Minister said.
