Four lakh low-cost houses would be constructed: Sheila

‘A grant of Rs.1 lakh for each unit would be provided by the Centre’

The allottees will have to contribute Rs.30,000 to Rs.40,000

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday re-affirmed her Government’s commitment to rehabilitate slum dwellers by replacing existing slum clusters with low-cost multi-storey housing.

Ms. Dikshit said four lakh low-cost dwelling units would be constructed in various parts of the city as her government was keen to rehabilitate residents of slum clusters without relocating them from their present locations.

Speaking at a function where she laid the foundation stone of a project for widening of Road No. 66 at Jafrabad in East Delhi, Ms. Dikshit said efforts would be made to construct the low-cost dwellings at the very place where slums exist.

She pointed out that a grant of Rs.1 lakh for each unit would be provided by the Centre. The housing units, which will have two rooms in addition to a kitchen and a toilet, would cost Rs.2 lakh, whereas one-room units would cost Rs.1.7 lakh.

The allottees will have to contribute Rs.30,000 to Rs.40,000, which would be provided by the banks on a low rate of interest and easy repayment terms.

Ms. Dikshit said her government was committed to providing all amenities to the residents of the Capital’s trans-Yamuna areas which are strategically better placed in view of planned development.

She expressed hope that the pace of development in East Delhi would turn it into a most developed part of the Capital and a well-planned green enclave.

The covering of trunk Drain No.1 to facilitate widening of Road No.66 in Jafrabad would help remove traffic bottlenecks and provide relief to hundreds of daily commuters, she said.

The project, which will take 12 months to complete, will cost Rs.5 crore, which is being provided by the Trans-Yamuna Development Board. The Irrigation and Flood Control Department will execute the work, which includes widening of the road by seven metres and covering the drain along 760-metre length of the trunk sewer.

Speaking on the occasion, the Member of Parliament from East Delhi, Sandeep Dikshit, said the North-East district had been selected as one of the 55 districts in the country which would be given Rs.30 crore per year for development of basic infrastructure and imparting of employment-oriented education.
