CHENNAI: To mark the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, a five-day National Youth Festival will begin here on January 12. The theme will be ‘Youth for Progress and Excellence.’

Over 2,500 delegates from various States and Union Territories are expected to attend the 13th edition of the festival.

State Minister for Sports and Environment, T.P.M. Mohideen Khan, who launched the official website of the festival ( www.nationalyouthfestival.com), enumerated measures initiated by the Tamil Nadu Government for encouraging sportspersons.

Sports promotion

While Tamil Nadu, and Chennai in particular, had emerged as a favoured destination for Information Technology, the Minister said the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime was keen to promote sports in a big way.

Holistic approach

Rajya Sabha Member Kanimozhi, who released the official logo and mascot, hoped such festivals would remind that there had to be a holistic approach for moulding the younger generation. She promised all cooperation and support for its conduct.

Platform

Secretary, Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department, Christodas Gandhi, said the festival, besides bringing out hidden sporting talent, was also a platform for presenting the diverse cultural heritage of the country.

Cooperation

Member-Secretary, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), Atulya Misra, said with the cooperation of the State Tourism and Culture Department, the participating delegates would be taken around the Information Technology corridor and the historical spots in and around Chennai.

Yuvakriti expo

A highlight of the festival was the Yuvakriti exhibition to be held on the Model Senior Secondary School premises, where a food festival, adventure programmes and cultural activities would be organised.

The National Service Scheme (NSS) has planned a youth convention to coincide with the festival.

There is no entry fee for the festival to be held in multiple locations including the SDAT Indoor stadium, Anna University auditorium, Government Museum Theatre, MCC Higher Secondary School auditorium, WUS Centre, B.Ed. College auditorium, Model School complex, and Veterinary College auditorium.
