KC factions launch agitation

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: The four Kerala Congress factions which have come together under a unity platform launched their first agitation against what they term the anti-people and anti-farmer policies of the State government here on Saturday with a protest march, culminating in a dharna, at the district Collectorate gates.

Speaking on the occasion, K.M. Mani, chairman of the new forum, launched a direct attack on the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and alleged that the party could no more take pride as a workers’ party. It now works for big corporate houses and is involved with fake lottery magnates. On the other hand, the party, once claimed itself to be the party of the poor, and the government it leads, have failed to arrest the spiralling price rise. While Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are providing rice at the rate of Rs.2 a kg, the CPI(M)-led Kerala government is giving rice at Rs.20 to Rs.25 a kg. R. Balakrishna Pillai, convener of the forum, said the political climate in the State was akin to the one that existed in 1959 during the first Communist Ministry. The new education policy is aimed at propagating atheism and is against morality, he alleged.

Mr. Pillai extended all possible help to the Christian and Nair Service Society managements in their fight for protection of rights.

P.C. George, MLA, and T.M. Jacob, leaders of the KC (Secular) and KC (Jacob), also addressed the gathering.
