Wickets tumble on day one

Special Correspondent

INDORE: It took Delhi two sessions to bowl out Baroda for 199 and gain the upper hand. In response, Baroda had Delhi tottering at five for three at one stage on an eventful opening day of the five-day Ranji Trophy semifinal at the Usha Raje Stadium here on Saturday. However, the pair of Mithun Manhas and ‘rookie’ Aditya Jain took Delhi to 49 at stumps without further damage.

Baroda batsmen showed poor stroke selection on a pitch that had fair bounce and carry. On the other hand, Delhi’s top-order comprising Aakash Chopra, Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan fell to a well directed new-ball attack from Sunit Singh and debutant Salim Veragi.

The experience of Amit Bhandari, part of the Delhi team since his debut in 1997-98, came good on this day. On a first-day pitch that had moisture, Bhandari got four wickets before Sumit Narwal matched his tally. Barring Connor Williams, who was out to a beauty, the other three victims of Bhandari — experienced campaigners Satyajit Parab, Rakesh Solanki and the young in-form wicket-keeper-batsman Pinal Shah — were caused by poor stroke selection.

When Delhi began its response, Sunit and Veragi cleaned up the top-order and brought Baroda right back into the match.
