PSPB inter-unit football from today

Bangalore: The 28th PSPB inter-unit football tournament will commence at the Football Stadium here on Sunday. In a press conference here on Saturday evening, sponsor ONGC’s officials released the schedule and the list of participating teams. The tournament that will conclude on January 12 features eight teams split into two groups of four teams each.

Defending champion OilIndia figures in Group ‘B’, while last year’s runner-up ONGC is placed in Group ‘A’. The championship will be inaugurated by ONGC Director A.K. Hazarika and National billiards champion Pankaj Advani on Sunday afternoon.

Subramanya hits century

Subramanya Raju’s 133 and Shoban Babu’s four for 71 spell helped National United CC defeat Friends XI by 85 runs in a KSCA Metro Shield match here recently.

The scores: National United CC 263 in 44 overs (Subramanya Raju 133) bt Friends XI 178 in 29 overs (Bhimesh 43 n.o., Shoban Babu four for 71); Indiranagar Cricketers 225 for six in 36 overs (Zeeshan 100 n.o., Muniraju 44) bt Star Cricketers XI 157 in 31.2 overs (Satish 71).

Young Muslims scores win

Young Muslims, with a goal in each half, defeated Bangalore Muslims 2-0 in the ‘C’ division football league championship here on Saturday. Allen (7th min.) and Santosh (57th) netted for the winner. In another tie, Bangalore Blues prevailed over Bangalore Independent 1-0 with Dillit, scoring the winner in the 65th minute.

Good show by State

The Karnataka Amateur Taekwondo Association (KATA), returned with a rich haul of 19 gold, 26 silver and 30 bronze medals at the conclusion of the 22nd National that was held in Kolkata, recently. The participants and medal winners were honoured and presented with medals and certificates, at a press gathering here on Saturday.

“This has been the best ever showing from the Karnataka contingent. We won 75 medals from a team of 98” said N. Ramamurthi , President, KATA.” Although Karnataka has been fielding teams since 1987, the surge in the medal haul has been noticeable only in the last four years”, he added.

The State finished second best to Delhi in the overall championship (decided on basis of gold medals won — Delhi had 23 gold to Karnataka’s 19) and also won the ‘best disciplined team’ trophy. Sidhanth D. Gambhir of the State was adjudged `best fighter’ of the nationals. A 10-member Black belt holders will participate in the International Martial Arts Games to be held in Thailand in the second week of April, this year

VIE all-India meet

The ‘VIE 2008’, an all-India inter-collegiate sports meet, which is conducted annually by the Jain Group of Institutions, will get underway here in Sunday. The meet will be formally inaugurated by Indian speedster S. Sreesanth.

Twenty-six colleges from Bangalore and 15 outstation teams will participate in the meet. The sports disciplines include cricket, hockey, basketball, swimming, tennis, badminton, table tennis, athletics, volleyball and snooker.
