Vemagal attack victims troubled

Special Correspondent

Action yet to be taken against culprits

Of 29 weaver families, only eight are left in village

The village wears an uneasy calm

BANGALORE: Even after a month of the brutal attack on the members of the weaving community in Vemagal taluk of Kolar district, neither have the local police taken any action in arresting the culprits nor has financial assistance been given to the victims.

Hoping

Out of 29 weaver families of Vemagal, only eight have remained; the rest have left fearing another round of attacks. As many as 16 of the families were hoping to get back to their looms in Vemagal.

The Akhila Karnataka Thogata Veera Kshatriya Yuva Vedike founder Ashwathanarayana told The Hindu that the weavers were still apprehensive about their safety as continuous threats were being sent to those weaver families that were hoping to return to their looms and start their work.

After attack

He said after the attack on the weavers on December 8 last, Vemagal village wears an uneasy calm and the weaver families still in the village are not sure if they should continue to start work on their looms.

Disturbance

The attack was unleashed on the grounds that the looms made sounds that disturbed some people in the village.

This harassment had been continuing for the last six months, said Mr. Ashwathanarayana.

Meanwhile, the Union Minister of State for Surface Transport and Highways K.H. Muniyappa has asked his party members to give all protection to the weaver community and has also directed the district administration to provide police cover to the entire Vemagal village.

The vedike has also appealed to the Governor to give them adequate security.
