KRRS to lay siege to Raj Bhavan

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: Urging the Government to find a permanent solution to the sugarcane growers who are demanding fixing Minimum Support Price (MSP) for sugarcane, the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) said it will lay siege to Raj Bhavan on January 11. More than 20,000 farmers are expected to converge in Bangalore next Friday to participate in the plan.

Disclosing this at a press conference, President of KRRS K.S. Puttanniah said that the KRRS was frustrated by the Government’s unresponsive approach to the farmer’s problems.

He said there was no other way than for the farmers to laying siege to Raj Bhavan and get arrested.

Detailing the demands of the KRRS, he said that the Government had to fix more than Rs. 1,100 as Minimum Support Price for sugarcane and compensation in case of failure by the sugar factories to crush the cane.

He added that Government should waive of loans borrowed by growers and Mysugar must commence its second unit as promised.

He said that farmers had already committed suicide because of the apathy of the Government in protecting their interests.

‘Government’s apathy’

Failure on the part of the Government to correct its attitude might worsen the crisis, he said.

Despite discussing the issue with the previous coalition Government, there was no respite for the growers.
