KOCHI: Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan has said that two lakh employees will be included in the welfare fund set up under the Kerala State Shops and Commercial Establishment Act by the end of February. He was addressing a State-level meeting of district labour officers and assistant labour officers convened at the Ernakulam Collectorate here on Saturday. By March and April all employees in the sector would be brought under the welfare fund. The Minister regarded the welfare scheme as one of the best in the country. He urged the labour officials to try to achieve the target. Mr. Gurudasan said that employers were not cooperating fully with the initiative. Awareness campaigns would be held to educate them. Women employees contributing to the welfare fund for two years without fall would be eligible for maternity benefit equivalent to six weeks’ salary. Provision for pension for those resorting to self-employment was also proposed, the Minister said. Labour Commissioner Premachandra Kurup and Labour Secretary C.K. Vishwanathan were among those who were present.
