Pulse Polio campaign today

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As many as 308,632 children below the age of five are to be administered oral vaccine on January 6 and February 10 as part of the Pulse Polio immunisation campaign in the district.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, District Medical Officer Kumari G. Prema and Additional Director of Health Services P.K. Jameela said 2,467 booths would be set up for this at government and private hospitals, primary health centres and sub centres, anganwadis, railway stations, airport, bus stand, boat jetty and tourist centres all over the district.

While 1,721 booths will be in rural areas, 121 will be set up in 13 high risk areas in the coastal and tribal belts and in urban slums.

Manned by two vaccinators, each booth will cater to 125 children. Forty-three mobile booths and 31 transit booths would also be pressed into service. A total of 4,934 trained vaccinators and 247 supervisors have been drafted into the campaign. The district health administration has procured 20,524 vials of vaccine for the programme.

Task force

A task force committee chaired by the District Collector will spearhead the campaign. The task force will be assisted by coordinators at the district and zonal level. Ward- level committees have also been constituted. The DMO said all hospitals, PHCs and community health centres in the district had been equipped with stocks of the vaccine.

Control room

Minister for Health P.K.Sreemathy is scheduled to inaugurate the State-level Pulse Polio campaign at a function to be held at the Government Fort Hospital here on Monday. Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar will preside over the function. A control room has been set up for the campaign in the district.
