Credit cards, fake passports, jewellery seized

Police on the lookout for the kingpin

MANGALORE: Police arrested here on Saturday two Sri Lankan Tamils allegedly having connections with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

Credit cards, fake passports and jewellery worth Rs. 3 lakh were seized from the two, a press release from Superintendent of Police N. Sathish Kumar said.

A team headed by Mangalore North and Rural Circle Police Inspectors Umesh G. Shet and Jayanth V. Shetty raided a lodge and arrested them. They are Bala Roban alias Roban alias Kadirvelu Gunaselvan (22), resident of Vavuniya district, but settled in Ramamurthy Nagar, Bangalore.

The other is Selvathambi Jayasheelan alias Sheelan (25), resident of Sangana district, North Jaffna. He was also residing in Ramamurthy Nagar, the release said.

A false passport in the name of Kathirvelu Gunaselvan was also recovered.

The accused reportedly told the police that they purchased jewellery from jewellery stores in Mangalore and Karkala using the fake credit cards on instructions from a Sri Lankan national based in Bangalore.

Their contact reportedly promised to pay them an appropriate commission for the job, the release said. The mobile phones seized from them contain names of nationals from various countries, Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) Ashit Mohan Prasad told The Hindu here.

“This appears to be a well-knit international racket of buying costly items using fake credit cards,” he said. The first accused Gunaselvan has admitted to having prepared the fake passport at Chennai for use within the country and for their other activities, he added.

A case has been registered under the Foreigners Registration Act and cheating against the accused in the Mangalore North (Bunder) police station.

The police are on the lookout for the kingpin, he said.
