India Blues posts win

VISAKHAPATNAM: India Blues wrapped up a 2.5-1.5 win over Afghanistan in the third round of the men’s league match in the Asian team chess championship at the Swarna Bharathi Indoor Stadium here on Saturday.

For a team which comprised unrated players, Afghanistan’s Habibullah Fedaee surprised IM Sunil Mokal Prathamesh after Sharify Aziz held former Asian junior champion and India Blues captain J. Deepan Chakravarthy to a draw.

But Neelotpal Das and Gogineni Rohit pulled off decisive wins to clinch the issue for their team.

India Reds, led by Krishnan Sasikiran, scored a significant 3-1 win over Vietnam despite the captain held to a draw by Truong Son Nguyen Ngoc in the first result of the table.

In the women’s section, India Reds scored a 2.5-0.5 win over India Blues even as captain Dronavalli Harika fought back from a seemingly lost position to hold WGM Swathi Ghate in Sicilian Dragon Variation in the last result of the board. The results: Third round:

Men: India Blues bt Afghanistan 2.5-1.5 (Neelotpal Das bt Khaiber Farazi; J. Deepan Chakravarthy drew with Aziz Sharify; Gogineni Rohit bt Tahah Amit; Sunil Mokal Prathamesh lost to Habibullah Fedaee).

Sri Lanka lost to Iran 1-3 (Madushanka Telge Peiris Gayan lost to Ehsan Ghaem Maghami; R.M.C.M. Rajapakshe lost to Morteza Mahjoob; M.K.A. Russell drew with Morteza Darban; G.C. Anuruddha drew with Amin Nasri).

Vietnam lost to India Reds 1-3 (Son Truong Nguyen Ngoc drew with Krishnan Sasikiran; Liem Le Quang lost to Surya Sekhar Ganguly; Dung Anh Nguyen drew with G.N. Gopal; Hai Thien Dao lost to Abhijeet Gupta).

China bt Uzbekistan 3.5-0.5 (Wang Yue bt Tmur Gareev; Bu Ziangzhi bt Anton Filippov; Jianchao Zhou drew with Marat Dzhumaev; Hao Wang bt Saidali Iuldachev).

Women: India Blues lost to India Reds 0.5-2.5 (Swathi Ghate drew with Dronavalli Harika; Soumya Swaminathan lost to Nisha Mohota; Baisakhi Das lost to Aarthie Ramaswamy).

Iran bt Indian Greens 2-1 (Shadi Paridar bt Ch. Sahajasri; Shirin Navabi drew with Kanuru Tejaswi; Shayesteh Ghader Pour drew with Y.G. Sriharika).

Vietnam lost to China 0.5-2.5 (Tu Le Thanh lost to Xue Zhao; An Thanh Ngyuen Thi drew with Qian Huang; Kim Thien Le Kieu lost to Yang Shen).

Uzbekistan bt Sri Lanka 3-0 (Yulduz Hamrakulova bt B.G.D. Umesha; O. Sabirova bt S.A. Ranasinghe; Nafisa Muminova bt G.K. Herath).
