“Order on ID card good but impractical”
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has described as “impractical” the order of Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna that everyone in Delhi should carry an identity-card from January 15 onwards.
Party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar said the BJP had been demanding issue of an all-purpose photo identity card which should be water-proof, not easily damaged and small enough to carry in a pocket. The party had suggested a national data bank where names and other particulars of all citizens could be maintained. Once this was done the BJP would welcome making ID-cards compulsory for all citizens.
He said more than 50 per cent Delhi residents did not have any kind of photo identity cards. An order making it mandatory for people to carry ID-cards would thus lead to enormous harassment at the hands of the police if the law-enforcement agency was empowered to check people.
