Rich tributes paid to Valliappa

PUDUKOTTAI: Speakers at a function to mark the valediction of the day-long cultural and literary programme in memory of child-poet Azha. Valliyappa here, paid rich tributes to the initiative taken by the late poet in using literature as a means for instilling values among children.
They also pleaded for starting more journals in Tamil to identify and nurture the talents of children in the state and to institute an award to honour writers of children’s literature.
Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests S. Regupathi, who honoured Tamil writers and publishers on the occasion, said that Azha. Valliappa realised the simple fact that it was children who would play a major role in shaping the nation. He said that Valliyappa’s principle of imparting discipline through a child-friendly literary style not only brought about virtues among the children of yesteryears, but also revolutionised the history of child literature in Tamil Nadu.
He also honoured child-poet Kuzha Kathiresan with the ‘Valliyappa Ilakkiya Virudhu’; publisher S. Vairavan with the ‘Valliyappa Pathipalar Virudhu,; and patron for child literature P. Venkataraman with ‘Valliyappa Ninaivu virudhu.’
A cultural team from MRP Matriculation School in Azhagapuri bagged the ‘Valliyappa kalai virudhu.’ The toppers in Tamil paper in the SSLC and Plus Two public examination held in March / April 2007 were given a cash award.
Book exhibition
Poet Chella Ganapathy said that several books including those penned by Azha Valliyappa were displayed a book exhibition held alongside the function, organised jointly by Valliappa Ilakkiya Vattam; Pudukottai Ilakkiya Peravai and Pavendar Bharathidasan Ilakkiya Peravai. He said that there was a strong case for bringing out more children’s journals to nurture their talents.
