PUDUCHERRY: The new year at Alliance Francaise looks exciting, with cultural programmes, music and painting shows, meetings with great people and film screenings planned. January will feature a play titled ‘Phèdre in India’, in French and Tamil; in February there will be ‘Fusions culturelles’, a meeting of artists from France and India; and the March will showcase ‘Fête de la francophonie’, an annual exercise in the language of romance. According to a press release here from Alliance Francaise director Michel Houdayer, the institute has planned to begin work to air-condition their auditorium in 2008. The programmes for January include a meeting with Patrick Counillon of the University of Bordeaux III on ‘the discovery of India by the Greeks and Romans’ on the 10th of the month at 6.30 p.m. Café de Flore has signed up a DJ with live music to entertain members of Alliance Francaise on January 19 from 7 p.m. At the gallery at 37, Dumas Street, a painting exhibition by French artist Sapphyre will be held from January 11. On January 23 and 24, Astrid Bas’ production, a fusion of Racine’s play and J.C. Bailly’s Journal, will take place from 6.30 p.m.
