HEALTHCARE: Collector R. Vasuki administering polio drops to a child in Dindigul on Sunday. DINDIGUL: Over two lakh children in the age group of 0-5 years in Dindigul district, and more than one lakh children in Theni districts were immunised in the first phase of Pulse Polio programme on Sunday. Administering oral vaccine to a child at a camp here, Collector R. Vasuki said that the second phase of National Polio Eradication Programme would be held on February 10. Mobile unitsTwenty-five mobile units were mobilised to cover remote and inaccessible areas such as Solaikadu, Pandrimalai, Adalur Mannavanur, Sirumalai, Manjalparappu, Perumparai, Poolathur and Kodaikanal.Medical and para-medical teams and field staff reached these hilly areas well in advance to immunise children at remote villages. Over 5,343 persons, including government staff, members of Rotary Clubs, students and volunteers from non-governmental organisations were engaged in the work. As many as 160 vehicles were provided to them for the purpose. Special centres were set up at railway stations, bus stands, markets and other places to cover people on the move. Immunisation was carried out at government hospitals, six private hospitals, 166 schools, 842 noon meal centres, 128 sub-centres and 22 primary health centres in Dindigul district. A total of 1,232 — 1,131 in rural areas and 101 in urban areas — had been set up. TheniOver one lakh children were immunised in Theni district at 786 centres manned by 3,504 field staff, including officials from various departments and volunteers in non-governmental organisations. Clubs were deputed to cover all children, according to Collector Har Sahay Meena.
