“Refund excess fee to students”

Directive to 3 private medical colleges

PUDUCHERRY: The territorial administration has directed three private medical colleges here to refund the excess fee collected from students in the last two academic years.

An order issued on Thursday directed Mahatma Gandhi College and Research Institute, Sri Manakula Vinayaga Medical College and Hospital and Sri Venkateshwara Medical College Hospital and Research Centre to return the excess fee to the students.

The government had sought a compliance report from the colleges in this regard, the order issued by C. Selvanathan, Under Secretary to Government (Health), and copy of which was released to the media on Saturday, said.

The government had fixed Rs. 1.5 lakh as tuition fee and Rs. 40,000 as other fees for the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute. Against the fee structure fixed by the government, the college had collected Rs. 2, 60,000 during 2006-07 and Rs. 2, 35,000 and it amounted to an excess fee of Rs. 1, 15,000, the order said.

The fee fixed for the Manakula Vinayaga Medical College and Hospital was Rs. 1, 50,000 as tuition fee and Rs. 35,000 as other fees.

The college had collected Rs. 2, 25,000 during 2006-07 and Rs. 2, 15,000 during 2007-08.

The order said the college had to return the excess fee amount of Rs. 70,000.

Likewise, Sri Venkateshwara Medical College Hospital and Research Centre had collected an excess fee of Rs. 1,05,000 during 2007-08 against Rs. 1,50,000 as tuition and Rs. 53,000 as other fees fixed by the committee constituted by the government to fix the fee structure.
