Preventive measure: A child being administered polio drops at an Anganwadi centre in Mathur in Pudukottai district on Sunday. PUDUKOTTAI: About 1.68 lakh children in the age-group 0-5 years in the district were covered under the first phase of the pulse polio immunisation programme on Sunday. The Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests S. Regupathi inaugurated the pulse polio programme at the Town Hall here by administering the drops to a few infants. Collector D. Uthirakkumaran and the Deputy Director of Health Ravindran were among those who were present. An official release said that a total of 5,100 volunteers were pressed into service for administering the drops at 1,272 centres in the district. Special booths were set up at railway stations, bus stands and tourism centres to administer the drops to the children coming from outside the district. PerambalurIn Perambalur district, the programme was inaugurated by the State Forests Minister N. Selvaraj. Speaking on the occasion, he explained the intensive efforts being taken by the Central and State governments to eradicate polio. He appealed to the people to extend their cooperation in checking the incidence of polio in the State. Collector Anil Meshram said that a total of 1.30 lakh children in the age-group 0-5 years in Ariyalur and Perambalur districts were being administered the drops. Mobile booths have also been set up to administer the drops to the children. AriyalurThe District Collector, V. M. Xavier Chrisso Nayagam, inaugurated the Pulse polio programme by administering the drops to a few infants at the Primary Health Centre at Poyioor near here. The Collector said that a total of 3,600 health workers and volunteers and members of service organisations administered the drops. A door-to-door verification would be held for two more days till Tuesday as part of a mop-up programme. The second phase of immunisation for this year would be held on February 10. KarurWhile parents should understand the importance of immunizing their child against polio, officials should ensure that all children in the district below the age of five should be covered under the polio immunization drive, Collector T.N. Venkatesh said. Launching the drive in Karur on Sunday, Mr. Venkatesh said that a total of 93,466 children below the age of five in Karur district were administered polio drops during the day. That apart 61 children belonging to 55 families from states such as Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan and were camping here as also 246 children from families based in other districts like Villupuram, Thiruvannamalai, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Erode, Tiruchi, Dindigul, Namakkal and Salem were immunized against polio, Mr. Venkatesh said. A total of 766 special centres were established to administer the drops to the target children all over the district. The Collector also inspected children being administered polio drops at Karur Railway Junction, Government Hospital, and a couple of other centres. While passing the Thanthonrimalai area, Mr. Venkatesh saw children belonging to Narikurava families playing on the roadside and promptly called in a mobile polio drops team to the spot and ensured that the children there were administered drops. Karur Municipal Chairperson P. Sivakamsundari, vice-chairman SP. Kanagaraj, Deputy Director (Health Services) Sadasivam and others participated in the programme. ThanjavurPolio drops were administered to children below the age of five in Thanjavur district under pulse polio mass immunisation programme on Sunday. C. Vijayaraj Kumar, Thanjavur collector inaugurated the programme by administering polio drops to children at old bus stand. He said that in the first phase held on Sunday, polio drops will be administered to 2,35,200 children. A total of 6040 staff and 178 supervisors were involved in the exercise. Polio drops were given in all the Primary Health Centres, Government hospitals, schools, temples, bus stand and railway stations. Mobile units were used to cover nomadic groups. Dr. N. Chandramohan, Deputy Director of Health, Thenmozhi Jayabal, Thanjavur Municipal chairperson, K.C. Seran, Municipal Health Officer, Municipal councillors Sadasivam, Kundavai Nachiyar, Leelavathi, Mahadevi participated in the programme. TiruvarurPolio drops were administered to children below five years in Tiruvarur district. U. Mathivanan, Dairy Development Minister inaugurated the programme by administering polio drops to children at Tiruvarur bus stand. M. Chandrasekaran, Tiruvarur collector participated. The minister said that polio drops will be administered to 1,17,310 children. A total of 816 centres have been put up in the district. Out of them 782 are in rural areas and 34 are in urban areas.
