BHUBANESWAR: The Sambalpur police on Sunday said two Maoists were killed during an encounter between their personnel and the extremists in the forests near Badibahal village under Jamankira Police Station of the district. The exchange of fire between the two sides started around 7.30 pm on Saturday when the Maoists opened fire at the Special Operation Group personnel were carrying out a combing operation in the area. The firing continued in the darkness till 4.30 a.m on Sunday when the police found two Maoists lying dead. Several other extremists, some of them injured in the firing, had managed to flee. The dead were identified as Raj of Badmal in Rengali Block and Kalia Mirdha of Laikerabahal village in Jujomura Block of the district. The bodies were sent for autopsy after police got them identified by the Maoists who were in custody. The police have intensified the combing operation by deploying additional forces in the locality to trace the Maoists who had given the police the slip. The police claimed to have recovered three SLRs that the extremists had looted from the police in the past and one .315 rifle that the Maoists had taken away when they attacked the Forest Range Office at the nearby Badrama Ghat on Friday night. A group of extremists had attacked the forest range office at Badrama Ghat and set afire a number of vehicles parked there before decamping with the gun, some cash and other valuables.
