2,000 bales destroyed near Ranebennur Cause of the fire yet to be ascertained HAVERI: Cotton bales worth over Rs. 1 crore were destroyed in two fire incidents in Haveri district on Saturday. In the first incident, over 400 bales of cotton stored at the Dharwad District Cooperative Marketing and Purchase Yard on Yattinahalli Road on the outskirts of Haveri was destroyed. According to the police, the bales belonged to Tarachand K. Rathod, a merchant from Haveri. Although fire tenders were pressed into service, the damage could not be controlled, eyewitnesses said. Second incidentThe second incident was reported at Someswhar Ginning Mill on Ranebennur-Devaragudda Road near Ranebennur on Saturday evening in which about 2,000 cotton bales were destroyed. As many as nine merchants from Ranebennur had stored the bales on the factory premises. The Fire Services personnel from Haveri, Harihar, Davanagere and Kumarapatnam had a difficult time in bringing the fire under control. The cause of the fire and the exact amount of loss are yet to be ascertained. According to initial reports, the loss at Ranebennur and Haveri is estimated at over Rs. 1 crore.
