Security must not be intrusive

When people provided high security come to a place, roads are blocked for their motorcade to pass, as during the visit of Vice-President Hamid Ansari in Kozhikode last week. The sufferings to the common people because of this are multifarious — economic, industrial, official and so on — and ultimately non-productive.

Protection has to be given to top leaders, but not at the risk of citizens; nor by bringing life to a standstill for hours. Protection should be reasonable and fair and necessarily people-friendly. With an efficient and effective intelligence wing and an alert police system, security can be enforced without affecting public life. Both can go along.

In the era of video-conferencing and e-world, the government can save national income and ensure public freedom by using technology in ensuring security. If protection is accorded generally and without limits, it is the people who need it. Even the judges, the best and sole protector of people’s freedom, are not given tight security.
