CONCERTED EFFORTS: A health volunteer administering polio vaccine to a child at the Malappuram bus-stand on Sunday. MALAPPURAM: Refusing to give vaccination to young children owing to ignorance is tantamount to denial of justice to posterity, said district panchayat president Arimbra Mohammed. He was inaugurating district-level administration of pulse polio vaccination at a function held at the Government District Hospital, Manjeri, on Sunday morning. Manjeri municipal chairperson Safar Santha presided over the function. District Medical Officer K.N. Dinesh delivered the keynote address. Nearly 3.94 lakh children below five years of age were administered the polio vaccine in the district on Sunday. Those children who were left out will be given the vaccine in the next five days. As many as 3,188 booths were set up across the district to administer the vaccine. Nearly 7,000 personnel were on duty. There were two volunteers manning each polio booth, and a supervisor overseeing 10 booths. The health authorities had given polio vaccine to tribal children in the interior areas of the district on Saturday. According to Dr. Dinesh, the reach of the vaccine among tribal children was satisfactory as there was little resistance from the community.
