BANGALORE: Karnataka is likely to have a theatre museum at Hampi for showcasing its rich theatre heritage.

During the inaugural session of ‘Ranga Prathibha – 2008,’ a 10-day festival of plays directed by young directors, theatre exponent and MLC Chandrashekhar Kambara suggested to the government to set up such a museum, which would be the first of its kind in the country.

Secretary, Kannada and Culture, I.M. Vittalamurthy, who was also present at the inaugural session, responded positively to the suggestion. He said the government would seriously examine the issue if Dr. Kambara submitted a detailed proposal in this regard. He would include the proposal on museum in the budgetary proposals of his department, Mr. Vittalamurthy said.

Later, Dr. Kambara told presspersons that he would submit the proposal to the government within a week. It might take two to three years for setting up the museum after the government gave its clearance, he noted.

Explaining his concept of theatre museum, Dr. Kambara said the museum should trace the history of evolution of theatre in Karnataka, besides showcasing different theatre forms.

It should also showcase books on theatre and theatre personalities.

The museum should indicate the impact of theatre on other fields, he said and noted that the proposed museum would require about two acres of land.

Meanwhile, the 10-day theatre festival of young directors began on Sunday at Ravindra Kalakshetra here. The festival, being organised jointly by the Sangeeta Nataka Akademi and Karnataka Nataka Akademi, would feature a play every evening.

Speaking at the inauguration of the festival, Sangeeta Nataka Akademi Deputy Secretary O. P. Bharathi hailed the pro-active role of the Karnataka Nataka Akademi in organising the event.
