Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: National secretary of the Communist Party of India D. Raja on Sunday said the United Progressive Alliance Government should immediately carry out a course correction if they wanted the continued support of the Left parties. Addressing the concluding session of the three-day conference of the Puducherry unit of the CPI, Mr. Raja said the UPA had moved too far from the Common Minimum Programme and they had to make corrections to the economic policy in the coming budget. Advice to CongressHe called upon the Congress to do some introspection on the recent Assembly election results if they did not want to be isolated from the people. The Congress had completely deviated from the path followed by Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi and it was more concerned about “fast growth” rather than addressing the real issues of poverty and unemployment. Stating that the CPI was not against economic development and industrialisation, Mr. Raja said “growth should not lead to a situation where fruits of development reach only a few hands.” He claimed that the new economic policy had only widened the gap between the rich and the poor. Nuclear dealThe Left parties opposition to the Indo-US nuclear deal would continue, he said.
