BANGALORE: The National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources (NCPNR) and the Jan Vikas Andolan have alleged that Grasilene, a unit of Grasim Industries at Kumarapatnam near Harihar in Davangere district, is releasing untreated waste from its plant into the Tungabhadra, polluting the environment. Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, S.R. Hiremath, president of NCPNR, said the pollution was being aggravated by the expansion of the plant to over 70 per cent of its present capacity. The highly toxic chemicals released into the environment were causing both air and water pollution. This was having an adverse affect on human beings and animals, especially during the monsoon, he said. “There is widespread opposition to expansion of Grasilene division of Grasim industries,” he added. The organisations also announced that a two-day national conference would be organised on February 11 and 12 at Gandhi Ashram, Sevagram in Wardha district of Maharashtra. CampaignThe Jan Vikas Andolan and NCPNR have also intensified the “Azadi Se Swaraj” campaign which looks at various environment issues and have also urged the Government to combine the Land Acquisition Bill and Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill introduced in the winter session of Parliament into one, through a national campaign.
